Renewable energies are an essential part of today's energy mix. Renewable energy sources are described as inexhaustible by human standards and should therefore be available over the centuries. These energies are in particular hydropower, wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy and tidal energy generated.

Another source of renewable energy is the energy potential of biomass. The particular focus of GelsenKraft is dealing with this source.

Biomass is mainly produced from renewable resources. For example, corn for the production of bioethanol, which is used as petrol substitute. A CHP plant can replace a light fuel oil with a vegetable oil substitute. Both alternatives above could also serve as competition to human nutrition. Consequently, one can speak of those cited as examples of applications causing competition between food and energy production.

Is it morally justifiable to use food for energy? We argue that all available alternative biomass should be used before you use food to produce energy!

Therefore, we analyse the entire market of industrial by-products and develop waste streams for new applications. By-products can also be novel materials for energy production and thus provide new opportunities to the bioenergy industry.

And only if there is no by-product or residue available as raw material, we will deliver a suitable bio product. But undoubtedly we will always take into account the principles of sustainable development.

After all, if only sustainably produced biomass is used, it can help in the long term for our energy and raw material supply. The energy system must have the possibility of renewable raw materials with natural regeneration, so that future generations can use it in the same way as today's.
